""To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to loose everything else"" I think that means if you want something that going to help you or make you happy, you will have to sacrifice something that is already in your life. Life isn't fair so you can not have everything you want in life. For example you might want to be a doctor when you grow up, just because you are going to make a lot of money, and you became that doctor. But as time past you might want to change your career to the job you really love you will have to sacrifice a career that you made lots of money in it, to something that you really like. That's what I think this quote by Bernatte Devlin means.

I think this quote means that recieving something new is excellent but you may want to let go of the other things you had in the past; otherwise it might be a waste. For example, let's say you have 5 cars. One day, you buy a new one and you love it much more than the other cars. Wouldn't it be thoughtful and generous to give a friend or family member one of your old cars? I mean it makes sense right? I would like to comment on my classmate Luigi Mathieu's own comment. He makes a good example of what the quote stated. It showed almost the same point my example was making, - Stephane Francois 281

I believe that the "The gain which is worth having, it may be necessary to loose everything else" means you can own something but eventually there will be a time where you have to sacrifice that possession. I cannot copy on two of my classmates comments because I am the second one, although I can comment my opinion on Luigi's comment. As I stated early the phrase meant you can gain material things but eventually you will have to sacrifice them. An example would be in school, so far you have the freedom of choice but eventually in time like High School you will have lost or sacrifice 100% of your choice to your parents, relatives, etc, one example of this lost of choice in education would be military school, you lost every possible option ever because you lost sight of your focus which is your joy Luigi mentioned. Now this is my personal opinion on what the phraseTo gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to loose everything else" meant!

The quote ""To gaim that which is worth having,it may be necessay to loose everything else---".
I think the quote means if you want something it wont have a problem coming to you or it wont be as hard for you to achieve/get what you want but the main point is that you are going to have to give up something or sacrifice one thing for the other. The quote is trying to say "In life its like a pattern you gain and you lose some." Their will be at a point of time where something is more worth having and you going to have to loose whatever isnt really important.

Shae Davis I think the quote that was written by bernadette is very true because if you really want to experience joy you have to suffer a little you have to feel a little pain or as they say you have to get stinged a few times before you taste the honey. All though for some people they have already experienced there pain before they felt the suffering, but they will one day

I have to agree with Luigi response because it's like a replica of what i also feel Bernadette is saying. Where he said " If you want something, you will have to sacrifice something that you you already have to recieve it.

I am not sure if i understand what Stephane is trying to say when he wrote "When you want something you have to let go of other things in the past or else it would be a waste:.
What i dont understand is how he can compare his example to his definition of the poem. I do unferstand the concept of what he is trying to say but he did not write in a way which his reader can understand. I do believe that when you hold on to things that happened in your past or that you recieeved a while ago and you really dont need the extra baggage, THEN i would see how it would be a waste but not everytimr that you want to gain something else the past would be just a waste probably just in some cases.

to gain that which is worth having it may be necessary to loose everything else i think it means no matter what happens to you that u cant loose anything if you feel down. but when theres something you want to achieve, u cant lose if you try your hardest.

The quote "To gain which is worth having,it may be necessary to loose everything else" means that to live better or get something or be happy you have to sacrifice what's less important. Like Luigi said life isnt fair and to get one thing you have to get rid of something. For, example say you win a lot of trophies n theres no more space left in your trophy case, but you just won the most important trophy of your lifetime. Your going to want to take out the least important trophy from the case and make room for the more important one. So i do agree on L
uigi's comment because were on the same "page." So basically what Bernadette meant was in life your going to have to make sacrifice for the new and more important things. That's what i think his quote means.

" To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to loose everything else".I believe this quote simply means in order to pursue and/or accomplish your biggest dreams or goals..it may cost u everything else in return. For instance .. A goal for life may be to lose weight..in order to accomplish this goal u may have to give up certain things that your doing that is hindering you from doing accomplishing your goal. Like luigi said "Life isn't fair so you cannot have everything you want in life".

"To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to loose everything else” I think he means that there are greater things than others. In other words to really get what you need you have to give up what u want. For example if u need to pay your rent for your apartment and u don’t have it u might have to sell a few valuables jus to pay the rent.
I disagree with SassyVinci101. I think she under stood what Bernadette Devlin was expressing but she probably tried to dig to deep in to what he stated. I also disagree with Planetgod. I feel that what he said didn’t really relate to what Bernadette Devlin said.

"To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to loose everything else" i think means to have something that is rare or hard to get might cost everything you already have. Life is definitely not fair and it's a struggle for ANYBODY. People don't always think about what they already have, so when they see something that they feel is worth having they lose something they may care about. Like the Flintstones. As i recited the quote "To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to loose everything else" I was reminded of the Flintstones because in the movie, Barney Rubble, did the best on a rock test at his job. When he was collecting he saw his friend, Fred Flintstone, did terrible and switched test. Fred, to stay ahead in the game was told to fire Barney so he could stay in charge. Staying in charge made Fred loose his friends and even his wife. Question was it worth it now? That's what this quote makes me reflect on.

I think this quote means that to have what is essential or what you truly desire,is worth losing everything which is not. An example is having a place to live. That is something you need to have. You would give up certain things just to acquire this.

I agree with lugi because i understand what he is taking about. You can make a connection to what he wrote.
I don't understand planet god because he just switched around the words in the quote.

''To gain that which is worth having, it may be nesessary to loose everything else''. I think this quote is excellent . To me this quote means that if there is a thing that is worth fighting for and having you must be willing to give up everything you have to get that specific thing.

I think that it mean to pursue or accomplish a goal, you must loose somethings. You must be ready to loose something in exchange to get something you want. For example, to buy something that you want, you must loose money. Another example is that if you want have a good career, you must loose your time for fun to study and get good grades. If you want something to make you happy, you must loose somehting that you already have. Also to coment on the others answers, i think that Luigi explained it very well, but i didn't get what the example meant. I didn't understand what Stephane said. The explanation was weak and the example didn't make sense to me.

"To gain that which is worth having,it may be necessary to loose
everything else".In my view I think that this phrase means there are things that are worth giving up everthing you have.Sometimes you have to give up silver to get gold.I remember a parable in the Bible that talked about a man who gave up all he had for a pearl of great price. This meant that the lords follwers had to give up what they had to follow Jesus Christ and recieve salvation.I am going to stop right there before I start preaching.Basicly what I am trying to say is that an oppurtunities that come only once may be more valuable than the ones that never leave. This is my view of this statement. My view also seems to be shared with my two fellow peers Alexander Duvivier and also
Stephane Francois. As they have previously stated that you may have something good but
it would be foolish to give up a
chance to gain something better. This is my point of veiw on
the qoute and my two classmates opinion.

I think this quote means to have something, you have to give up something. Life is tough, and you aren't always aren't going to get what you want. For example, if you become a baseball player, you're going to have to give up family time. So, u play pro baseball and gain money but, you lose family time. I don't understand Luigi's example because it's very weak. It doesn't make any sense and left me perplexed after i read it. I also don't understand planet god's example because in his example you aren't gaining anything. it left me puzzled after reading it.

I think the quote "To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to lose everything else" means if you really want something, you may have to give up everything you have or something that is really important to you to get it. For example, I could have a company that I know I could make a lot of money with, but I would have to use all the money I have to keep the company going. I agree with what this quote is saying.

Do we not know the difference between "lose" and "loose"?
This is an English blog for heaven's sake!

loose-not firmly or tightly fixed in place; detached or able to be detached.
lose-to be deprived of or cease to have or retain (something).

If you do something that you're not genuinely passionate about, it is a little soul-crushing. Just not worth it. See the link below for more info.
