Dr. Carlyle Thompson Visits I.S. 68

On Wednesday May 27th, 2009 Classes 273, 274, and 281 had the honor to meet with Dr. Carlyle Thompson. Dr. Carlyle Van Thompson is a Professor of African American and American Literature at Medgar Evers College, the City University of New York. He received his Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. Dr. Thompson is the chairperson of the Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy. He has published scholarly articles on the works of Toni Morrison, Ernest J. Gaines, Nella Larsen, and Charles Waddell Chesnutt.

Dr. Thompson gave the students a taste of what it would be like to be in a college level class. He presented video excerpts, poems, and texts that had the same themes and as a group they looked for text-to-text, text-to-world and text-to-self connections, even taking a look at some of the text that they have read throughout the school year such as literary works by Virginia Hamilton and Walter Dean Myers. The students had many questions, were very engaged in the lesson and many were totally disappointed when the time was up and Dr. Thompson had to leave.

On behalf of I.S. 68, the English Department and all that participated in this event I would like to personally thank Dr. Thompson for taking time out of his very busy schedule to make a difference in the lives of the students of Isaac Bildersee.

Jonathan from 281 say'in that day was inspiering to me because it made me learn that reading is going to be the most powerful thing that you can do. It will help you learn more high level words so people can see that you are smart and that you have read some pretty long books with fansy smansy words!

Dr. Carlyle Thompson gave great speeches and taught me a lot of things, like what a cinquain poem is, what it was like getting lynched, how important reading is and how to be au fait with a poem by Claude McKay. He shared his experiences with us about how he excelled to the stage he is presently at. I admire him as a very hard working and persevering man. He is very intelligent and it reflects as he opens his mouth. Based on what Mrs. Hall told us about Dr. Thompson, he is a great teacher, just like her. He is very educated. This day was such an honor for me to actually meet such a significant individual. I am grateful that he took the time to share part of his life with the I.S 68 community.

Dr. Thompson's visit to IS 68 was an interesting one. I was able to meet and speak with a professor and it felt like if I was in a real college class. I learnt new vocabulary words and strategies to understanding literature, mainly poetry. Before I met him, I thought it would have been complicated to communicate with a professor, in particular, one with a P.H.D, but a while after, I felt comfortable learning from him. This opportunity gave me a first-hand look at the setting I'll be in, in the future.

Johnny here from class 281, Dr. Carlye Thompson's visite was a great expirience for me, I learned thing about literature that I never thought could have existed. He gave us an expirience of how it would be in college, by speaking to us at a college level. I enjoyed the poem exercise that we did, I learned a new type of poem and some thing that could make a poem better.
